Architect Mark Lee, co-principal of Johnston Marklee, invited Michael to custom design some upholstered seating for the private art museum his firm built in 2016 on the Los Angeles, Paul Williams-designed estate of producer-collector Steve Tisch. In a sharp departure from the pared-down forms of PLANEfurniture, Boyd designed the sybaritic Banana sofa and lounge chairs—over-scaled, over-stuffed pieces that contrast with austere Donald Judd furniture at the other end of the exhibit space. The monumental Crab table was also designed for this private commission to compliment the biomorphic abstract seating.
