Sitting on the Edge, the first major exhibition of the Michael and Gabrielle Boyd Collection, was organized by curator Aaron Betsky at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1998. At that time the Boyds were living in the city and had donated many pieces to the museum. For the exhibition they loaned 150 objects and pieces of furniture from their home, and the presentation was acclaimed in catalogue essays by Paola Antonelli and Philippe Garner.
