The Wende Museum explores the history of the Cold War through graphics and artifacts, from a pamphlet to chunks of the Berlin Wall. Since 2017 the museum’s collections have been displayed in Culver City within a 1948 armory building. Boyd worked with Christian Kienapfel to restore and remodel the building and supervise every detail of the museum’s visual package from the institution’s logo to case work, from interiors to gardens, color schemes to water features. Museum director and founder Justin Jampol sets up oppositions in the collection’s narrative and requested that Boyd follow suit in the revamped design package. The landscape was designed by Boyd in collaboration with the frim Segal/Shuart to be one element within the larger project that pushed aside Cold War history, and instead embraced all of the gardens’ possibilities that the Southern California climate offered.
